diggin up an old argument that has haunted this board many a time, the whole is someone a hobbyist, Amatuear, low Budget filmmaker, Filmmaker etc etc etc

well I just og tmy first payslip through from the feature im workign on , it says right across the top Warner Bros Production Limited and below the name of the feature Trojan Wars (AKA Troy) Ok im doing Armoury but does this now make me a proffesional ? beacuase im earning money from the film industry or am i still an amatuer / hobbyist /low budget filmmaker/ filmaker (delete as applicable)

your a professional prop maker or whatever the term is. You could hardly pass yourself off as a pro film maker tho!

I believe you can be an independent filmmaker and not have a professional bone in your body!

I think being a professional comes down to accepting a position of responsibility in someone elses film, and doing that one position as well as possible, with the tools provided.

reason i posted this is i remember a big flame on this board about whether someone is an amatuer blah blah and one of the reasons given for being a pro was you earn money for what you do.... which i think is a pants argument

in my mind someone is a proffesional if they are an authority in what they do with confidence.

now im earning money for being a prop maker and i ve also possible lined up two other hollywood features after this one , my official job title is workshop assistant and when the credits come up at the end of the film that is what i will be under , undcer the armourer / special props. considering i have two other holllywood features lined up and im now earnign my income this way i wouldnt condsider myself to be a proffesional..

hence going back to filmaking as a director i have far more experience and knowledge as i do with making props...

on another level i condsider myself to be an IT proffesional but i speciallose very much in one field of IT, though i can call myself a IT proffesional so on that basis can i call myself a film industry proffesioanl ?? regardless of whether my work is in directing my own stuff or working on props ????

end of the day more bugging me at the moment is the amount they throw in skips at elstree and two how to savatage big brother which is a stone throw away (or 400 flaming arrows reaminding from galdiator at easy access)

PS all aside well chiffed ot have a pay slip with warner bros across the top. going to frame it so i can hang it with my first pay check from Warner for directing ;-)

That is cool to frame it. I have always nicked an camera report from the "Pro" shoots I have done.

I have them from some big names. I also try to keep my payslips too.

I think that you are a professional as long as you work like one on the set--No matter how much you get paid. I still need to have a "day" job but I shoot two months a year as a DP or 1st AC and I call myself a professional.
